FAQ

 WHY THE IFA? WHY NOW?

As our mission statement makes clear, we are committed to free speech and we are committed to spotlighting publishers and writers who share our vision for a freer society where anyone may express his, her, or their opinions and ideas without fear of reprisal from the status quo.

IS THE IFA POLITICALLY MOTIVATED?

Beyond upholding the (suddenly) dangerous doctrine of absolute free speech, no. Empathically: No. Freedom of Speech is valuable to anyone, regardless of political affiliation.

WHO MAY JOIN THE IFA?

Any independent publisher or writer who believes in freedom of speech as strongly as we do. It’s that simple. Drop us an email and let us know what you’ve published and we’ll take it from there.

IS THERE A FEE FOR JOINING?

At the moment, no. We're interested in using resources on the Internet to get the word out about the vibrant independent fiction being published today. As we evolve, things may change, but for now, the answer is no.

WHAT GENRES DOES THE IFA SUPPORT?

We support all the major genres, including Crime/Noir, Science Fiction, Horror, Fantasy, Adventure, Westerns, and, yes, Romance. If you work with any of these genres, you are welcome here.

DOES THE IFA SUPPORT "LITERARY" / NON-GENRE FICTION?

At the moment, no. "Literary" writers tend to look down on genre fiction and we are interested in fiction, not friction. That may change in the future. For now, we are focusing on genre fiction only.

WHAT ACTIONS WILL THE IFA TAKE TO HELP PROMOTE THE WORK OF MEMBERS?

We will actively promote all members on our website as well as social media. We will also encourage members to promote each other. We will offer (online) seminars on how to use social media as an advertising service (and other methods).

I DON'T LIKE THE KRAKEN! DO I HAVE TO PUT THAT SYMBOL ON MY BOOKS?

No. Being a member of the IFA does not obligate you to use the Kraken symbol on your publications. We would prefer you do, obviously, to create a standard readers may look for when shopping for independent books, but we are not going to force anyone to place the symbol on their book(s).

WHAT ARE SOME PLANS FOR THE FUTURE?

The IFA will have annual awards for outstanding member publications (we will find a democratic way to determine recipients). As stated, we will post online seminars to help advance our cause. We also intend, at some point in the future, to begin holding conferences throughout the country to increase visibility and allow members to meet and work together in person.

IS THE IFA A PUBLISHER?

At this time, no. We see no reason to be a publisher. Whether this changes in the future will be entirely up to the alliance at large.

IS THERE IFA MERCHANDISE?

Yes. We have an online store with T-shirts and coffee mugs and other doodads to, ultimately, help get the word out.
